While the 13th edition of IPL remains postponed indefinitely, we celebrate the 10 most successful captains in the history of IPL.

IPL as a league challenges everyone involved in the game, be it players, coaches or the support staffs but the most challenging job to do as a part of the league is to captain a side. It’s very much difficult to take the team home through a quite hectic schedule and it is this role of the captains that we celebrate in this article.

Here a list of 10 Most Successful captains in the history of IPL.

10. Virendra Sehwag

The destructive India opening batsman who used to decimate his opponents with his dashing attitude started his IPL journey with his home franchise Delhi Daredevils followed by Kings XI Punjab.

Sehwag helped his team win 28 matches with a winning percentage of 53.84, which makes him our number 10 in the list of 10 Most Successful captains in the history of IPL.

9. Anil Kumble

With a win percentage of 57.69 percent, the spin wizard won 15 matches for the team out of 26 he captained.

The Former India Test captain was appointed as captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009. Under his captaincy the team finished as runner up in 2009 season and as semi-finalist in 2010 season.

Though he couldn’t win the trophy for his franchise but finishing as number 2 in 2009 from the bottom position in 2008 shows his captaincy skill and abilities, which makes him our number 9 in the list of 10 Most Successful captains in the history of IPL.

8. Sachin Tendulkar

Not a single list of cricket can be completed without adding the little master in the list.

Sachin, the former Indian captain, who led Mumbai Indians on 51 instances, took his team to the winning side 30 times with a percentage of 58.65.

7. Steve Smith

The next name in the list is Steve Smith. The Former Aussie Captain has a winning percentage of 67.85 in the tournament.

As a captain of Rising Pune Supergiant, Steve Smith almost led to the 2017 edition of the tournament as a champion side before losing to Mumbai Indians by 1 run.

6. Adam Gilchrist

Known for his destructive batting style at the top, the Kangaroo Wicket keeper-batsman showed his marvelous captaincy skill when he the Deccan Charges to win the trophy in 2010.

5. Shane Warne

Who could forget the inaugural edition of the tournament when Rajasthan Royals appointed the Spin master as captain of the side. Shane Warne guided his players to be winner of the league.

Shane Warne boasts a winning percentage of 55.45 in 55 matches he captained the Rajasthan Royals in. Warne, who remained the heartbeat of the franchise for four seasons, is our number 5 on the list of 10 Most Successful captains in the history of IPL.

4. David Warner

David Warner, another Aussie in the list has a place in the list for his presgtigious record of winning 26 games as captain in 47 games. 

The Aussie player always lead the team from the front and ended up as second top scorer of the 2016 season. He also won the maiden title for Sunrises Hyderabad in the same year.

3. Gautam Gambhir

Proving himself as the captain, India never had, Gautam Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders five times to the play-offs. The franchise made him captain of the side in 2011 after continuous failures of the team.

The left-handed bastmen, also known as Gauti, won the IPL title twice in 2012 and 2014 for the KKR and ended 71 times as winning side out of 129 matches he played as skipper.

2. Rohit Sharma

Taking the captaincy baton from Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma has tested enormous success in IPL as captain.

The Mumbai lad has led his team to win record title, the most by any team since the inception of the cricket carnival.

Rohit’s prolific career reads 60 wins with a winning percentage of 58.65 percent in 104 games he captained. This make him stood at number 2 among the most successful captain in the history of IPL,

1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Talking about the most successful captains and forgetting ‘Thala’ is like committing a crime. Arguably, one of the most successful Indian captains tops the chart of the most successful captain in IPL too.

The captain who always backs his players went to win the trophy three times for the CSK. Dhoni is only captain who led his team to record 9 times to the play-offs and seven times in the finale of the Cricket Festival.

Stats say that Dhoni is the most successful captain in the history of India Premier Leauge with 104 winning matches in his bag, the most by any captain.
