On the 13th Anniversary of IPL, we bring the list of all Purple Cap Winners In IPL History.

The Purple Cap is a coveted award given to the bowler with the most number of wickets in a single edition of the IPL. As many as 10 bowlers have won the award, with Dwayne Bravo and Bhuvneshwar Kumar winning the award twice. And, India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only bowler in IPL history to have won the Purple Cap for two consecutive years.

In this article, let us go on a trip down memory lane and look at the Purple Cap winners in every edition of the Indian Premier League.

Purple Cap Winners In IPL History

#1. 2008 season –Sohail Tanvir (RR)

Led by the legendary Shane Warne, an unheralded Rajasthan Royals outfit won the title in the 2008 edition of the IPL. And, one man who played a pivotal role in the side emerging as a force to reckon with was left am pacer Sohail Tanvir. A bowler with an uncanny and a quick action, Tanvir mixed his pace and varied his length with good effect and scalped 22 wickets to win the Purple Cap award in the maiden edition of the cash rich IPL.

Tanvir’s stand out spell of the 2008 edition was the 6/14 that he took against the formidable Chennai Super Kings. Tanvir’s spell rattled the CSK outfit, and paved the way for Rajasthan to wallop the opposition by 8 wickets with more than 5 overs to spare. Tanvir played just the one solitary IPL edition.

#2. 2009 season –RP Singh (DC)

During the 2009 IPL edition, the tournament was moved to South Africa, and Rudra Pratap Singh made full use of the extra bounce and carry on offer in South Africa to emerge as the leading wicket taker of the tournament. The left arm Indian pacer took 23 wickets during the 2009 IPL edition and became the first Indian bowler to win the Purple Cap award.

RP Singh used his ability to move the ball both ways in a fiery spell of 4/22 against the Kolkata Knight Riders. He scalped the two key wickets of Brendon McCullum and Chris Gayle to rattle the opposition and helped his side to thrash the opposition by 8 wickets.

#3.2010 season –Pragyan Ojha (DC)

In the subsequent edition of the IPL, another Deccan Chargers bowler spun a web around the opposition batsmen to win the Purple Cap in the 2010 edition of the IPL. Pragyan Ojha emerged as the leading wicket taker by dismissing 21 batsmen and was a vital cog of the Deccan Chargers bowling attack in the third edition of the league.

The left arm spinner’s ability to get drift in the air coupled with his ability to extract vicious turn off the surface made him a lethal weapon in the armor of the DC outfit. His best spell of the tournament was the 3/26 that he took against the Mumbai Indians. Ojha scalped the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan,Dwayne Bravo and Saurabh Tiwary in the encounter. However, his valiant effort with the ball went in vain as the Mumbai side thrashed the Deccan Chargers by a margin of 63 runs.

#4. 2011 season-Lasith Malinga (MI)

Lasith Malinga is one of the most difficult bowlers to deal with, especially in limited overs cricket. The Sri Lankan legend’s ability to bowl toe crushing yorkers couple with his ability to vary his pace in a subtle manner makes him a bonafide match winner for his side.

In the 2011 edition of the IPL, Malinga scalped a stunning 28 wickets to win the Purple Cap award in the fourth edition of the league. Malinga’s heroics with the ball throughout the season played a pivotal role in his side reaching the semi final stage of the event. His best performance of the season was a devastating 5/13 that he took against the Delhi Daredevils. His mercurial performance helped his side to skittle out the opposition for a total of just 95 and enabled them to canter home by 8 wickets.

#5. 2012 season- Morne Morkel (DD)

Morne Morkel at his best is a nightmare for any batting line up. Morkel’s ability to get extra bounce off the wicket makes him an awkward bowler to face. And, during the fifth edition of the IPL, Morkel was at his riveting best throughout the tournament.

The lanky South African pacer bagged 25 wickets in the tournament and won the Purple Cap award. His best performance of the tournament was a savage 4/20 that he took against the Kings XI Punjab. His performance helped the Delhi outfit to beat the opposition comfortably by 6 wickets.

#6.2013 season- Dwayne Bravo (CSK)

the 2013 edition of the IPL, Dwayne Bravo created history by becoming the first bowler to have scalped more than 30 wickets in a single IPL edition. The West Indian all rounder took 32 wickets in the 6th edition of the IPL and his tally has been unmatched till today.

Bravo’s heroics with the ball, especially in the death overs played a key role in the CSK outfit reaching the finals of the 2013 edition of the IPL. His best performance of the edition was the 4/42 that he took against the Mumbai Indians in the final of the 2013 edition. However, Bravo’s spell was not enough, as the Mumbai side beat the ‘Men in Yellow’ by 23 runs to win the 2013 IPL trophy.

#7. 2014 season- Mohit Sharma (CSK)

Another CSK bowler topped the wickets chart in the 2014 edition of the IPL. Mohit Sharma was the star performer of the 7th edition of the cash rich league, and picked up 23 wickets for the CSK side. Mohit was accurate, used the crease to good effect and varied his pace in a subtle manner to win the Purple Cap.

His best performance of the season came against the Mumbai Indians. Mohit took the key wickets of Kieron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu and finished with excellent figures of 4/14 to help his side to beat the opposition by 7 wickets.

#8. 2015 season- Dwayne Bravo (CSK)

Dwayne Bravo features in the list for the second time. In the 2015 season, the CSK all rounder picked up 26 wickets to win the Purple Cap in the 8th edition of the IPL. Bravo’s clever change of pace coupled with his relentless accuracy were important factors in the West Indian emerging successful.

Bravo’s stand out performance of the 2015 season came against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Bravo took 3/22 in the match, mixed up the length in a clever manner along with subtle variations in pace and helped the CSK outfit beat the opposition in a low scoring thriller.

#9. 2016 season- Bhuvneshwar Kumar (SRH)

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s ability to make the ball move both ways and his unwavering accuracy makes him the trump card of his side. In the 2016 edition of the league, the Indian pacer scalped 23 wickets to win the purple cap in the 9th edition of the IPL.  

Kumar’s stand out performance of the league came against the Gujarat Lions side. The pacer took 4/29 and helped his side to pummel the opposition by 10 wickets.

#10. 2017 season- Bhuvneshwar Kumar (SRH)

Bhuvneshwar Kumar features in the list for the second consecutive year in a row. The spearhead of the SRH bowling attack, Kumar scalped 26 wicket in the 2017 edition of the IPL to become the first and only cricketer to win the Purple Cap for two consecutive years.

Kumar’s best performance of the season came against the Kings XI Punjab side. The pacer took 5/19 in the match, and his riveting spell played a crucial role in his side beating the Punjab outfit by a margin of 5 runs.

#11. 2018 season- Andrew Tye (KXIP)

In the 11th edition of the IPL, Andrew Tye was the stand out performer of the tournament with the ball, scalping 24 wickets. Tye is the only bowler from the KXIP side to win the Purple Cap award. The Australian mixed the length to telling effect, took the pace off the ball in the death overs, and was a vital cog in the KXIP bowling attack.

His best spell of the 2018 season was 4/16 he took against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. Tye took the crucial wickets of Evin Lewis and Hadrik Pandya in his four overs. However, his valiant effort went in vain as the Mumbai side beat the Punjab outfit by just 3 runs.

#12. 2019 season- Imran Tahir (CSK)

At the rip age of 40, Imran Tahir proved that he was still a force to reckon with in the 2019 edition of the IPL. The CSK spinner took 26 wickets to become the third CSK bowler after Dwayne Bravo and Mohit Sharma to win the Purple Cap award.

Tahir’s stand out performance of the 2019 edition was the 4/12 that he took against the Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. His spell allowed his side to skittle out the Delhi outfit for a score of just 99, and helped them to wallop the opposition by a margin of 80 runs.
