Chennai Super Kings In IPL 2020 – Team Analysis

As the IPL 2020 auction saw the light of the day, all the team owners and captains were keen on getting the best options for their respective teams. Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020 were ardent on signing bowlers for their side as they had retained most of the players from their previous squad. Quite satisfied with their batting lineup, the owners spent their purse on setting up a bowling front for the team.
All the teams fared up quite neatly in a subtle manner balancing the all-rounders with a sufficient number of batsmen and bowlers to support the team. The teams faced quite a bit of a dilemma when it came to the choice between buying a bowler or a batsman but there was one team that was quite sure of its needs and the team’s owners placed the bets accordingly.
Chennai Super Kings seemed quite confident of its batting lineup on the IPL 2020 auction day as they placed bets extensively on the bowlers. Targeting the spin action exclusively, the team management played their cards on point and was able to sign some great players. The young lad from Madipakkam, India, R Sai Kishore was signed by the team for a mere price of 20 lakhs. Even though not many people know of the bowler, the price seems to be a steal for the Kings. He was joined by veteran Indian leggie, Piyush Chawla who looked like a bewildering decision to everyone. Australian Bowler Josh Hazlewood and English Bowling all-rounder Sam Curran completed the IPL 2020 auction list for Chennai Super Kings.

CSK Team Analysis

The dangerous batting lineup comprised by Shane Watson, Faf Du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu has been successful in giving a great start to the team. The middle-order led by the captain himself has some world-class finishers to wind up with a series of big knocks.
Kedar Jadhav, Dwyane Bravo, the newest addition, Sam Curran, and Ravindra Jadeja can assist in some fast knocks and can handle the scoring under pressure too. Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020 depend extensively on their bowlers and with a great bowling line up like theirs, they are comfortable in winning the matches easily. The bowling prowess of the team has been strengthened by the addition of Josh Hazlewood, Sam Curran, and Piyush Chawla to the squad. With an all-round setup and uncanny bowling lineup, Chennai Super Kings will look forward to winning this edition of IPL.

Spinning it up – The plan for CSK?

The team is ready with an up-front experienced spin-attack like no other team in this competition. Even though the squad is comprised of veteran spinners but these players have represented their respective countries in World Stages. The off-spin routine led by Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja will now be well supported by leg spinners Imran Tahir and Piyush Chawla.
The young lad R Sai Kishore will add to the surprise element the ability to take wickets. With the skills to turn the ball exceptionally, the spinners will be able to turn the fate of the match in their favor. The special ingredient to this lineup, Kedar Jadhav can surprise the batsman with his unique bowling action and will easily play the role of an additional spinner.
A great strategy adapted by the captain and the coach, the team will look forward to depending on the spinners in their home matches as the slowpitch of MA Chidambaram Stadium will be a disaster for the opponents.
Coach Fleming appreciated the team’s spinning options and was quite happy with the decision to add more spinners in the squad. During the press conference, he said, “We have always favored spinners and we need to make the right choices. We have different types of spinners, but we have got to make some decisions now around how to use them.”

Will the experienced gamble pay off?

Chennai Super Kings is one of those rare teams that has been captained by Captain Cool, MS Dhoni and he will continue as the captain of the franchise. A brilliant player and an even better captain, MS has always tried to play it safe in the Indian Premier League. There are a few players who have made it to the squad each year and have proven to be the match winners for the captain. And this edition looks forward to continuing the legacy of the team.
The term ‘Old is Gold’ defines the performance and the attitude of the Chennai Super Kings over the years. As the players step on the field in their Golden Yellow jerseys, the crowd is enthralled by their powerful performances each season. We hope the team continues to perform extraordinarily but the decision of the team management to retain every player and not introduce newer faces unlike other franchises is a gamble and we hope this gamble pays off.
Veterans like Shane Watson, Murli Vijay, Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, Imran Tahir, Harbhajan Singh, and MS Dhoni are the key players of the team currently. And the most questionable purchase of this season, Piyush Chawla for 6.75crore, being introduced to the team has shocked the fans completely.
Chennai Super Kings has relied on experience in their IPL run and they continue to do so by signing one of India’s old-timers. Coach Stephen Fleming stated that they didn’t have a lot of money and their decisions were an outcome of how the other franchises fared at the auctions. “We didn’t have a lot of money and we were dictated a little bit by what others want so we had to play the waiting game on big players that fit nicely into our team,” Fleming summed up the 2020 auctions during a press conference.

Predicted XI for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020

With a squad comprised of big boys and the young lads, it will be a tough task for the coach and the captain to select a squad that dwells the two generations. We can expect the following line-up for the first match:
Shane Watson, Faf Du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Piyush Chawla, R Sai Kishore, Lungi Ngidi, Deepak Chahar

What is the weakness of CSK?

A bigger challenge for the team will be putting up a competitive score on the board. A great opening partnership could give a great start to the team but the middle order will have to step up so that the runs are added continuously. One of the major drawbacks of the team has been the middle-order with only the captain stepping up for the team. To win the 2020 title, Chennai Super Kings will have to make major changes in their field involvement too. It will be a bigger challenge for the coach to set up a playing XI with the experience paving the way for the young guns.

A balanced middle-order will win the team IPL: Our Verdict

This year’s IPL could be a tough test for MS Dhoni and his men as the competition is ready to get bigger and more competitive than the previous editions. All eyes would be on the partnership that the captain and the coach share and their decisions to play the team in a certain manner. When we analyze the squad to frame a winning team, a lot of match finishers and hard hitters will be floating all over the squad.
The middle-order will have to step up if the team intends to win this edition of IPL. Leading the order will be the man himself, MS Dhoni. The middle-order of the team lacks consistency and has sometimes failed to escalate the innings to the finishing line. With players like Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja, Chennai needs to form an accelerating partnership in the death overs for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020.
