La Liga 2019-20: Fixtures and Predictions | Gameweek 33

It’s advantage Real Madrid now in the La Liga title race as they have opened up a two-point lead over Barcelona at the top of the table, courtesy of their 1-0 win over Espanyol.

The Blaugrana are now walking a tight-rope after their 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo last week, and next up for them is a monumental fixture against Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou, which could have a big say in the title race.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid also have a tricky game against Getafe, and there are two other mouth-watering clashes between Villarreal and Real Betis, as well as Valencia and Athletic Bilbao.

That, and much more is in store for us in gameweek 33 of La Liga. So without further ado, let’s preview the upcoming round of fixtures in the Spanish league.

Mallorca vs Celta Vigo (Prediction: 1-2)

Mallorca will kick off the proceedings this week when they welcome Celta Vigo to the Iberostar Stadium on Tuesday night.

The hosts are currently 18th on the standings, one spot and eight points behind their adversaries of this week.

Celta were struggling in La Liga before the COVID-19 break, but as they’ve started to pick up points recently, we expect them to win against Mallorca, who are winless in their past five matches in the league.

Leganes vs Sevilla (Prediction: 1-3)

A David versus Goliath clash – 19th-placed Leganes will play hosts to Sevilla in gameweek 33, wherein the visitors should comfortably return home with all three points, judging by the current form of the two sides.

Julen Lopetegui’s men have played four straight draws since their 2-0 win in the Seville Derby, and subsequently, they’ve fallen to fourth on the standings.

That being said, Sevilla should be able to win this match, given Leganes haven’t won any of their previous five games in the league.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid (Prediction: 1-1)

Atletico Madrid’s trip to the Camp Nou in gameweek 33 could have a huge impact on the La Liga title race. After the Catalan giants’ recent draw against Celta, they simply have to win this game at all costs to keep their title hopes alive.

For their part, Diego Simeone’s men have been in good form lately, and will hope to keep the momentum going heading into the final round of fixtures.

Given the magnitude of this game, with so much at stake, it should be a closely contested match.

Alaves vs Granada (Prediction: 1-1)

16th-placed Alaves are tied on 35 points with two teams above them, and the home side will look to take another step towards safety with a positive result against Granada on Wednesday night.

The visitors are 10th on the table, winless in their past four games, the latest of which was a painful 1-2 defeat at the hands of Eibar. Granada’s recent turmoil may help Alaves get over the line, given they too have struggled in recent weeks.

Valencia vs Athletic Bilbao (Prediction: 1-1)

Wednesday’s second game will see Athletic club travel to the Mestalla to play against Valencia in gameweek 33.

Both teams have struggled for any sort of consistency in recent weeks, which is why we expect a closely contested affair, which could end in a draw.

That being said, there’s still an outside chance for both Valencia and Athletic to qualify for Europe, which should be enough motivation for the pair, who are eighth and ninth in La Liga standings respectively.

Real Valladolid vs Levante (Prediction: 0-0)

After two back-to-back draws with strong opposition teams – Getafe and Sevilla – Real Valladolid have steadied their ship somewhat, and next up they will welcome Levante to the Jose Zorilla.

The visitors are in 12th place, two spots and six points ahead of Valladolid. With little more than pride at stake for both these teams, expect a drab stalemate between the two evenly matched sides.

Real Betis vs Villarreal (Prediction: 1-3)

A side which really struggled post the coronavirus-enforced break, Real Betis will host Villarreal in gameweek 33, hoping to rise up from 13th on the table.

While the Seville-based club do not have much left to fight for, their opponents of Wednesday night are embroiled in a race to qualify for next season’s Europa League, which is why this game is a must-win for the Villarreal.

Given Betis’ present struggles and Villarreal’s recent 2-0 win over Valencia, they are the favourites for this game.

Real Sociedad vs Espanyol (Prediction 1-0)

Winless in their past five La Liga matches, four of which have been losses, Real Sociedad, the surprise package of this season are really struggling at the moment.

The game against Espanyol at home couldn’t have come at a better time, as it would help them end a run of four consecutive defeats.

For Espanyol, relegation looks very likely and it’s all about building momentum from here onwards, given they are 10 points from safety with just five games remaining.

Real Madrid vs Getafe (Prediction: 2-1)

Courtesy of their recent 1-0 win over Espanyol, Real Madrid have opened up a two-point gap at the top of the table, and they would be hoping to build on their five-game winning streak against Getafe.

The visitors overcame Real Sociedad last week, but face another stern test in La Liga this week. Getafe are currently fifth on the table, only two points behind Sevilla, which makes this game a must-win for both parties.

Expect an epic encounter at the Alfredo di Stefano on Thursday night.

Eibar vs Osasuna (Prediction 1-1)

Both Eibar and Osasuna have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, which means when these two sides meet on Thursday, the game it can tilt in any team’s favour.

Eibar come into this game after a surprising win over Granada, and similarly, Osasuna defeated Leganes 2-1 last week. Subsequently, the home side are 15th on La Liga standings, five points behind their next opponents, who also have a six-point lead over Eibar.
