Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will look for a reaction from his side on Saturday when they travel to Newcastle but Manchester United lost at St. James’ Park last season. In fact, the Red Devils have lost two of their last three trips to Newcastle and are struggling for confidence at the moment.

On the flip side, Newcastle United are on an unbeaten run of four games in all competitions at the moment and beat Burnley 3-1 at home ahead of the intentional break.

The Magpies smell blood ahead of the game on Saturday and will look to take advantage of a fragile and low on confidence Manchester United side this weekend.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United: Head-to-Head

Total matches: 169

Newcastle United wins: 43

Manchester United wins: 87

Draws: 39

Manchester United have the superior record in this fixture since their first meeting against Newcastle United in April 1895 in a Division Two game.

The Red Devils have dominated the fixture over the years and have handed out some chastening defeats to the Magpies.

But their recent record is patchy and their 1-0 defeat at St. James’ Park last season was one of the two losses they suffered in their last three trips to Newcastle.

Manchester United form (all competitions): L-W-W-W-L

Newcastle are unbeaten in their last four games and beat Burnley 3-1 at St. James’ Park in their last league encounter before the international break. Ahead of Saturday’s meeting against Manchester United, they are definitely the more in-form side.

Manchester United have lost two of their last four games in all competition but it was the 6-1 defeat at home to Tottenham ahead of the break that would have really shaken their confidence to the core.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United: Prediction

Manchester United’s confidence at the moment is rock-bottom after suffering the 6-1 humiliation at home against Tottenham. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants his team to react but a tricky trip to Newcastle awaits them.

They Red Devils have lost two of their last three trips to St. James’ Park and Newcastle will be keen to take on a side who have looked unfit and low on confidence in the opening weeks of the season.

Newcastle will make it hard for Manchester United to break them down and follow the pattern that they used when they won 1-0 at home last season. The Red Devils are banking on their greater quality to come good but it is going to be a tight game regardless.
