The suspension of sporting activities due to coronavirus pandemic has created uncertainty on the conduct of the ICC T20 World Cup in October-November this year.
According to a report by The Hindu, ICC is observing the situation closely and will take any decision only after everything gets clear to the apex body. ICC has decided to adopt a wait and watch approach, before deciding on the fate of the marquee event.
The preparations are on for the WC
There have been speculations going around the T20 World Cup that it could be postponed to next year or maybe up to 2022. ICC, on the other side refuted the reports of postponements as mere speculations, with no truth behind them.
“The ICC has not taken a decision to postpone the T20 World Cup and preparations are ongoing for the event in Australia this year as per plan. The topic is on the agenda for the ICC Board meeting [on Thursday] and a decision will be made in due course,” quoted The Hindu as the ICC spokesperson saying.
ICC Would observe the developments
It is learnt that ICC has decided to observe the developments closely with the National Rugby League in Australia likely to receive the go-ahead, with limited spectators in the stands. Thus the Cricket body has decided to keep a close watch on the developments and will make a call on the basis of Rugby League’s success.
Meanwhile, cricket experts have also suggested swapping the World Cup hosting with India to go ahead with the tournament but it’s unlikely to happen as there has been an ongoing conflict between ICC and BCCI regarding tax exemption for the 2021 event.
