The Boxing Day Test match is a cricket match game held in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. This involves the Australian cricket team (must) and an opposing national team that’s touring Australia during the southern summer. It begins annually on Boxing Day (26 December) and is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

A day after Christmas, December 26 is widely known within the uk and lots of Commonwealth nations, including Australia, New Zealand, and Canada as Boxing Day .

History of Boxing Day Test

Before 1980, only four Test matches were played in Melbourne during Boxing Day. They were played in 1952, 1968 and 1974 and 1975. Apart from this, matches took place in Adelaide in 1967, 1972 and 1976.

In the 1975 match between the West Indies and Australia, it was understood that the Boxing Day Test match could become big. On seeing the match, 85,596 spectators arrived on the first day of the match. However, the tradition did not start even after this match.

Around five years later, Australia started having a Boxing Day Test match in Melbourne. After this, there has not been a Test match in Melbourne in 1989. One day match was played between Australia and Sri Lanka on this day.

On this occasion not only Australia, matches are also played in New Zealand and South Africa. The New Zealand team is currently playing a Test match with Sri Lanka. The Kiwi team traditionally plays Test cricket in Wellington on this day. South Africa will play a Test match with Pakistan in Durban.
